RESIDENTS of Shimungalu in Mazabuka District have complained of suspected diarrhoea due to the untreated drinking water from the Kafue River.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, Roster Mwewa disclosed that Shimungalu Area near the fishing harbor only has one borehole which the population draws water from.
She says people are forced to draw untreated drinking water from the Kafue River instead of waiting in long queues to draw water from the only functional borehole.
She also calls on well-wishers to come to the aid of the people in the area by providing chlorine for the unsafe water so as to combat diarrhoea diseases in Shimungalu.
Mwewa adds that that access to water becomes a big challenge during the rainy season as the area gets flooded leading to cases of drowning while people draw water from the river.
She has since appealed to relevant authorities to help curb the water challenge at the Shimungalu harbor.
Meanwhile, Area Councilor, Kelvin Muleya, says he is aware of the water challenges facing the people of Shimungalu.
He is however optimistic that more boreholes will be drilled in 2024.
