…. when KCM starts operating optimally, observes Banda

The consortium of civil society organisations, advocating for the revamping of the mining sector in Zambia, has expressed happiness with the statement by President Hakainde Hichilema, during his recent press conference that Konkola Copper Mine (KCM), will soon get to full production.

Speaking on behalf of CSOs, Consortium Lead Samuel Banda says that pronouncement to well-meaning stakeholders is a clear demonstration that the Government is committed to revamping the mining sector which is Zambia’s primary economic engine and cornerstone of national development.

Mr Banda believes that once Konkola Copper Mine which is the national strategic investment asset begins to operate optimally will easily help Government achieve its ambitious 3 million metric tonnes of copper production target per annum by 2031.

“We the consortium is profoundly confident that KCM investor, Vedanta Resources will fulfil its investment commitments such as the injection of over USD 1Billion for mining recapitalization and development, clearing off payment USD 250 million to the suppliers and contractors that KCM owes, improving working conditions when the legal transition process is finalized, hopefully early January 2024,” he said.

“I wish to appeal to the stakeholders, suppliers, contractors, and employees at KCM to exercise some patience as the nation waits for Government and Vedanta Resources to finalize the transition process.”

Mr Banda, who is also Advocates for National Development and Democracy Executive Director, further called on political stakeholders to stop politicizing the Vedanta KCM transition process, which is not a political issue but borders on holistic economic development.
