Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) is saddened by recent media reports that two health personnel have been arrested for stealing medical supplies in Lusaka.
According to the Zambia Police, two Ministry of Health officials based at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) have been arrested for allegedly stealing 40 boxes containing Latex Gloves from the University Teaching Hospital.
ZAMMSA Senior Manager – Public Relations Bradley Chingobe says this is just a few days after assorted equipment including chemicals used for embalming were reported stolen at Lukulu district hospital mortuary.
“As ZAMMSA we feel this seriously undermines our mandate to ensure that all public health facilities are firmly equipped with medicines and medical equipment across the country,” said Mr Chingobe.
“Such acts of thievery do not only take away valuable resources from our health facilities but also deny those in need of medical attention from accessing quality healthcare services. In light of the recently procured Health Center Kits from Missionpharma and the bulk procurement of assorted medicines and medical equipment from Egypt, we expect a sufficient supply of medicines. It is therefore imperative, as citizens, that we safeguard these commodities to ensure that they meet the needs of the intended end users.”
He implored the general citizenry to be on the alert and report any malpractices they may be aware of to the nearest law enforcement agencies.
“As ZAMMSA we remain committed to ensuring that we provide a seamless supply of quality and cost effective medicines and medical supplies,” he concluded.
